Seventeen Mag Interview: Diego on “Rock of Ages”

Seventeen: Tell me about Rock of Ages! What was it like working with the cast?
Diego Boneta:
Rock of Ages was the best time of my life. That’s the best way to put it. Everything from the rehearsal to filming the movie. It was great. The audition process was really tough…

17: How so?
DB:
A lot of people were out for the part and I was just a regular guy. The male rock singers are all iconic voices. So that was tough.

17: How was meeting Julianne Hough?
DB:
Julianne and I clicked very fast. Instantly. She is such a sweet girl and she’s very talented. She became like my sister at the end of the shoot.

17: She plays your love interest, right?
DB:
Yes. Working with her was a pleasure, and we had so much fun. We were together so much and became very close.

17: What did you think when you first met her?
DB:
I thought, wow, she’s beautiful. And then I started talking to her and I saw that she’s very nice, very smart, very driven, passionate, talented…just fun to be around. She’s a very hard worker, and she’s very funny and very sweet.

17: Tell me about your character. How did he get into that 80s style?
DB:
One of the funniest things about this project is that all my musical influences are 80s bands, starting out with U2 and Queens. I knew all the songs already. I’ve always loved that kind of music. I had to prepare vocally a lot, even though I’ve taken 12 years of vocal lessons. The songs were very high and I had to develop that raspy, rocker voice. It was daily hours of training.

17: So back to your character. What is he like?
DB:
My character Drew is a rocker dude with big dreams. He’s an inspiring rockstar. He is a dreamer and he wants to make things happen, but he has stage fright. Julianne’s character helps him with this.

17: Have you ever had a moment of stage fright?
DB:
Sure! Before every performance I feel nervous. I felt the most nerves auditioning for this role. I had a migraine for three days while I was waiting to find out if I got the part.

17: What was it like on set working with such an amazing cast?
DB:
I’ve never met anyone as hard working and professional as Tom [Cruise]. He was learning how to sing for the first time and play guitar. We took guitar lessons together, which was pretty awesome. We’d have jam sessions together! A typical day would be doing a scene with Tom and then laying down a track with Mary J. Blige. It was very humbling! I learned a lot. I just wish someday I could be a quarter of what Tom is. He is the coolest…he’s a rockstar. He definitely killed it!

17: What was it like working with Russell Brand?
DB:
He is a comedic genius. It was impossible not to crack up around him. He’s also very smart, very witty and he’s just a sweet guy and fun to be around. We did a lot of scenes together, and he speaks Spanish very well. He spoke Spanish with me, but it wasn’t the cleanest conversation! It came out of nowhere.

17: Does your character in Rock of Ages deal with girls or groupies?
DB:
A little bit, but Tom is the one who plays the rockstar, so he has all the girls and my character gets jealous.
